What is eCommerce?
When you buy something online, you are purchasing it from an ecommerce store. Essentially, the e in ecommerce stands for electronic. The ecommerce market has grown exponentially over the last decade or so, and even traditional brick and mortar stores (like Wal-Mart, JC Penney, etc) are following suit. The growth of ecommerce has really helped to expose merchants to a much larger and broader base of customers. In addition, the overseas and international market is now a much more plausible opportunity as well. In order to run a successful ecommerce business, there are only a few basic things that are need. Perhaps the most important of these is a good working website with an easy layout and easy checkout methods so that customers can find what they want and purchase them simply and easily. This will keep them coming back over and over again, and they’ll think of the business as a “safe harbor” when they are looking for goods online.
Aside from the obvious website, ecommerce businesses need various software to assist them in taking payments from their customers. Echecks are an option, but most people prefer to pay with a credit card. In order to accept credit cards, merchants must choose a merchant processor to allow these payments to go through. In addition, a payment gateway is needed that will work with the shopping cart software of their choice. All of these things correlate together to make the checkout and payment process easy for customers. As for marketing, most ecommerce businesses offer people to join their email mailing list where discounts and other specials are sent periodically. Banner ads and promotions online are also a great way to expand the online ecommerce customer base. Having a good, solid ecommerce business can help expand merchants’ reputation as well as their overall profit margin.
